# Breast Reduction Scars

Healing, appearance and aftercare

Where breast reduction scars sit, how they change over 12 to 18 months, and the aftercare that supports healing.

## Where the scars are

Most breast reduction techniques leave scars around the areola, running vertically down to the crease beneath the breast, and often along that crease itself (an “anchor” pattern). The exact pattern depends on the technique used.

## How they heal

In the early months the scars tend to look red or raised, then gradually flatten and fade over roughly 12 to 18 months. How they settle depends on the technique, your skin and how you care for them.

## Caring for them

Sun protection, silicone once the wound has healed, and a supportive bra as advised by your surgical team all help the scars settle. Avoid tension across the healing wound.

## Realistic expectations

Breast reduction scars are a permanent but usually manageable part of surgery, and for many people they become far less noticeable with time. Scarring varies from person to person, so a personal assessment is the only way to understand what to expect in your case.
