## What an indented scar is

An indented, or atrophic, scar sits below the level of the surrounding skin, leaving a small dip or depression. It forms when there is a loss of underlying tissue as the wound heals.

## Why they form

Indented scars can follow acne, chickenpox or injury, as well as some surgery, when the skin heals with less support beneath it.

## What may help

Depending on the scar, microneedling or laser treatment may help improve the texture of an indented scar over a course of sessions, and in selected cases a surgical or injectable approach may be considered. There is no single best treatment, and a consultation is the best way to understand your options.

## When to seek advice

If an indented scar is a concern, it can be assessed and the realistic options explained.
