# Old & Mature Scars

Long-standing scars

Whether an old, settled scar can still be improved, and the options that may help.

## What “old” means for a scar

Most scars take up to two years to fully mature. After that, a scar is unlikely to change much further on its own, which is often when people ask whether anything more can be done.

## Can an old scar be improved

Yes – many long-standing scars can still be improved, though a scar cannot be removed completely. The right approach depends on whether the scar is raised, wide, indented or discoloured.

## Options that may help

Depending on the scar, laser, microneedling or surgical scar revision may help improve an old scar’s colour, texture, width or position. A consultation is the best way to understand what, if anything, may help.

## When to seek advice

If an old scar bothers you, it can be assessed at any time once it has fully matured.
