# Types of Scars

Knowing what you are looking at

The main types of scars explained in plain language - what each looks like and when it may be worth seeking advice.

## Hypertrophic scars

Red, raised scars that stay within the boundary of the original wound. They may thicken for up to about six months and often improve and flatten over the following one to two years.

## Atrophic or indented scars

Scars that sit below the surrounding skin, leaving a small dip or depression. They form when there is a loss of underlying tissue during healing.

## Stretched or widened scars

Scars that become wider or thinner over time, often where the skin is under tension or movement. They are common on areas such as the shoulders, back and tummy.

## Pigmented or discoloured scars

Scars that are darker or lighter than the surrounding skin. This is more common in darker skin tones, and sun exposure can make discolouration more noticeable.

## Tethered or adhered scars

Scars that feel stuck to the deeper tissue underneath, which can restrict movement or feel tight. Massage may help, and your surgeon can advise if further assessment is needed.

## A note on keloid scars

A keloid scar grows beyond the edges of the original wound and is more common in younger people and darker skin tones. Keloids can be more difficult to treat and can return after surgery, so specialist advice is recommended.

## When to seek advice

If a scar becomes increasingly raised, painful, widens, restricts movement or remains a concern after healing, it is worth having it assessed. A [consultation](https://www.aestheticplasticsurgeons.org/contact) with a consultant plastic surgeon can help you understand what, if anything, may help.
