Scar Treatments
Options for an existing scar
The main treatment options for scars explained, with realistic expectations and why the right approach depends on the scar.
Treatment depends on scar type
There is no single best treatment for every scar. What may help depends on the type, age, position and behaviour of the scar, and a consultation is the best way to understand your options.
Silicone
Silicone gels and sheets are a common first step for a red or raised scar and may help it settle when used consistently over several months.
Steroid injections
In selected raised or thickened scars, a course of steroid injections may help soften and flatten the scar and ease itching or discomfort.
Laser
Laser treatment may help improve a scar’s colour, redness or texture in selected cases. More than one session is usually needed.
Microneedling
Microneedling may help improve the texture of some scars over a course of treatments.
Surgical scar revision
Surgery to improve the position, width or appearance of an existing scar (see Surgical Scar Revision). It reshapes a scar rather than removing it.
Combination treatments
Some scars respond best to more than one approach used together; your surgeon can advise.
Treatment timing
Many treatments work best once a scar has begun to mature, so timing is part of the plan. In some scars, early silicone and sun protection are recommended straight away.
Realistic expectations
Treatment aims to improve a scar, not erase it. A scar cannot normally be removed completely, and the goal is to make it less noticeable and more comfortable.
