What is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift (mastopexy) is a procedure that aims to reshape the breast and raise the position of the nipple, without significantly changing breast size. It is sometimes considered by people whose breasts have changed in firmness or position after pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight change or over time.

Whether a lift is appropriate depends on many individual factors. Your consultant surgeon will examine you carefully and talk through what surgery can and cannot achieve for you.

Possible Benefits

  • Reshaped Contour

Aims to restore a firmer, more lifted breast shape.

  • Repositioned Nipple

The nipple position can be adjusted for better balance.

  • Improved Symmetry

May help address a difference in position between the breasts.

  • Clothing Comfort

Some people find clothing sits more comfortably afterwards.

Who Might Consider a Breast Lift?

A breast lift may be considered by people in good general health who feel their breasts have lost shape or position and who have realistic expectations. It is not suitable for everyone, and a lift will leave some permanent scarring, the extent of which varies.

Only a consultation with a qualified clinician can establish whether it is appropriate for you.

  2. Planning

People Also asked

Will a breast lift change my breast size?

A lift primarily reshapes and repositions rather than changing size. If you also wish to change volume, your surgeon can discuss the options with you.

Will I have scars after a breast lift?

Yes, a breast lift involves permanent scarring, the pattern of which depends on the technique used. Scars usually fade over many months but do not disappear entirely.

How long is recovery after a breast lift?

Recovery varies. Many people return to desk-based work within one to two weeks, but you should follow your surgeon’s individual guidance.

Can I breastfeed after a breast lift?

This can be affected by surgery and varies between individuals. If breastfeeding is important to you, discuss it with a qualified clinician beforehand.
