Where breast augmentation scars are placed, how they typically heal and fade, and how to care for them.
Where the scars are
Breast augmentation can be carried out through different incisions, and the scar depends on the approach: in the crease under the breast (inframammary), around the lower edge of the areola (periareolar), or, less commonly, in the armpit (axillary). Your surgeon chooses the approach with you and places the scar to be as discreet as possible.
How they heal
Scars usually look pink or red and feel firm in the early weeks, then gradually flatten and fade over roughly 12 to 18 months. A periareolar scar often settles into a fine line at the edge of the areola.
Caring for them
Once healed, sun protection, silicone and following your surgical team’s guidance all support how the scars settle.
Realistic expectations
Breast augmentation scars are permanent but for most people become much less noticeable with time. Scarring is individual, so a personal assessment is the only way to know what to expect in your case.
