Breast augmentation is a well-established procedure with a recovery most patients describe as manageable. While everyone heals at their own pace, the general timeline is consistent: the first few days are the most uncomfortable, the first two weeks see the biggest improvements, and your final shape settles over the following months.
Throughout your recovery you have direct access to your consultant surgeon and our nursing team, so you are never left wondering whether something is normal.
What affects how quickly you recover?
Recovery speed depends on implant placement (under or over the muscle), implant size, your general health, and how closely you follow your aftercare guidance. Submuscular placement tends to be a little more uncomfortable in the first week but settles well. Your surgeon will explain what to expect for your specific procedure.
Your week-by-week recovery
A typical recovery timeline after breast augmentation. Yours may vary slightly - always follow your surgeon's personal guidance.
Days 1–3
Rest & manage discomfort
Expect tightness, soreness and swelling. Rest at home, take prescribed pain relief, and keep movement gentle. Most patients are up and walking around the house from day one.
Week 1
Steady improvement
Discomfort eases noticeably. You can manage light daily activities. Continue wearing your support garment and avoid raising your arms above shoulder height.
Weeks 1–2
Return to desk work
Most patients return to office-based work. Swelling continues to reduce and the breasts begin to soften.
Weeks 4–6
Resume light exercise
With your surgeon's approval, gentle lower-body exercise can resume. Avoid chest and upper-body workouts until cleared.
Months 3–6
Final results settle
The implants drop into their natural position and the breasts feel softer and more natural. This is your settled result.

Submuscular vs subglandular recovery
Implant placement affects your early recovery. Here's how the two main approaches compare.
| Under the muscle | Over the muscle | |
|---|---|---|
| Early discomfort | Slightly more | Less |
| Time off work | up to 2 weeks | up to 2 weeks |
| Natural upper-pole look | Excellent | Good |
| Settling time | 3–6 months | 2–4 months |
The patients who recover most smoothly are the ones who rest properly in the first week and follow their aftercare to the letter. Recovery is not a race.

Recovery FAQs
The questions patients ask us most often about recovering from breast augmentation.
How long will I need to take off work?
Most patients return to desk-based work in up to 2 weeks. If your job is physically demanding, you may need longer - your surgeon will advise based on your role.
When can I sleep on my side?
We recommend sleeping on your back for the first 2–4 weeks. Most patients can return to side-sleeping comfortably after that, once cleared by their surgeon.
When can I drive again?
Usually after one to two weeks, once you can perform an emergency stop comfortably and are no longer taking strong pain relief.
How long until I see my final result?
The implants settle and soften over three to six months. This is when you see your final, natural shape.
