Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty)

Welcome to APS, where we specialize in transformative nasal surgery, known as Rhinoplasty. It is aimed at reshaping the nose for a more aesthetically pleasing appearance and, in certain cases, addressing breathing issues. Rhinoplasty can involve reducing or increasing the size of the nose, altering the shape of the bridge, tip, and nostrils, as well as adjusting the angle between the nose and upper lip. Results are tailored to each individual, influenced by factors such as skin condition, thickness, nasal and facial structure, genetics, and age, to ultimately produce an enhanced facial balance and improved appearance.

Correct an overly arched or "Roman" nose.

Note: If rhinoplasty is performed to correct breathing problems or nose deformities, the procedure may be covered by the patient's insurance policy.

Understanding The Journey

Nose surgery is typically performed under general anaesthesia, and while there is expected swelling and bruising, many patients can return home on the day of treatment. The duration and extent of black eyes can vary, taking 2-3 weeks to settle. A supportive splint is applied to the nose, and a pack is inserted into the nostrils which forces breathing through the mouth. The pack is usually removed before the patient goes home, and the splint is removed five days after surgery. Much of the swelling has subsided by this stage, allowing a good preview of the final result.

Most patients can resume day-to-day activities within two weeks, but impact exercises are best deferred for a month. The post-surgery discomfort is generally manageable with simple analgesia. Avoiding nose blowing or sneezing down the nose whilst there is discomfort. The nose tissues may feel stiff, and the skin may be numb for several months.

Complications from nose surgery are rare. Infection and bleeding issues are uncommon. The fine definition of the nose tip may be limited by skin thickness, as thick skin may not drape as accurately over changes in the underlying structure. Achieving a perfectly straight nose, especially if previously bent due to injury, may be challenging. Revision surgery may be necessary in some cases to optimize results. Breathing problems immediately after surgery are common. Whilst they usually resolve as the swelling diminishes, they can persist for a few weeks.
