Breast Reduction

Breast reduction procedures, also known as reduction mammaplasty, involves reshaping the breasts to create a smaller, lighter, and firmer appearance by removing excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin. Large breasts can not only cause physical pain, including back and neck issues, but also emotional and social discomfort. Additionally, they may limit exercise and impact overall well-being. Our breast reduction surgeries are designed to address these concerns, allowing our patients to lead healthier, more comfortable, confident lives with a proportionate and aesthetically shaped appearance.

Reasons for Considering a Breast Reduction:

Alleviate back, neck, or shoulder pain caused by heavy breasts.

Counteract sagging breasts resulting from their large size.

Achieve a more proportionate body frame by reducing oversized breasts.

Overcome limitations on physical activity due to breast size and weight.

Eliminate painful bra strap marks and skin rashes associated with large breasts.

Understanding The Journey

Conducted under general anaesthesia with an overnight hospital stay, breast reduction techniques are chosen to achieve optimal results. Removal of excess glandular tissue and fat, along with a reduction in the skin envelope, results in repositioning the nipple and areola to a higher, more youthful position. Our surgeons determine the most suitable procedure during the initial consultation, which may occasionally include liposuction alone for breast size reduction. Patients experience relief from physical pain, improved body proportions, enhanced appearance, and better-fitting clothes.

Following the procedure, most patients stay overnight. Significant pain is unusual and only simple analgesia is required. Supportive dressings are applied, and a sports bra worn, night and day, for the first 2-3 weeks to aid breast support. Dressings are removed after 10-12 days, and patients can resume normal activities within 2-3 weeks, while impact exercises are best delayed for 4-5 weeks.

Complications following breast reduction are unusual, with infection and bleeding being uncommon. Alterations in nipple sensation can occur. Surgery can interfere with the blood supply to the nipple. Complete loss is rare, but possible. Scars usually settle well within the bra area, with the use of Solution for Scars proven to enhance scar outcomes. Wound healing problems can occur due to the skin being pulled tight, occasionally necessitating dressings and secondary adjustments for optimal results. Breast reduction may impact breastfeeding, and if that is a concern, we recommend postponing surgery until after completing a family.
